Z, ever the thoughtful and attentive partner, had been planning a surprise proposal that would take their love story to the next chapter. He chose The Met Cloisters in New York City, a place filled with medieval-inspired architecture, lush gardens, and an air of timeless romance. However, what made this moment even more special? I’s closest girlfriends were in on the surprise, hiding nearby, ready to celebrate as soon as Z popped the question.
A Photographer’s Perspective: Planning the Perfect Surprise
When Z reached out to me about capturing this proposal, I was instantly excited, not just because I love proposal shoots, but because I and I went to high school together. It had been years since we had last seen each other, and now, I had the honor of capturing one of the most important moments of her life.
This was also my first-ever proposal in NYC, and what a perfect setting for it. The Met Cloisters in the brisk fall air felt like stepping into a fairytale. The anticipation, the planning, and the secrecy made this experience thrilling. Knowing that her best friends were part of the surprise made it even more fun. We coordinated every detail—where they would hide, the exact timing of their reveal, and how to capture the most genuine reactions.
The Ultimate Proposal Prank
To set up the perfect shot, I needed a way to position I without giving away the surprise. So, I came up with a little trick.
I told I, “Turn around! Z is going to come up behind you and lift you up for an epic shot.” She did as I said, smiling and completely unsuspecting. But, of course, that wasn’t the plan at all.
As Z quietly got down on one knee behind her, I played along, then gasped dramatically. “Oh my god, Z fell!”
She spun around, half-laughing, half-concerned—only to find Z on one knee, holding a ring. The realization hit her in waves. First, shock. Then, her hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes filled with tears. And then, the happiest yes.
The Unforgettable “Yes”
The courtyard erupted with emotion. I said “yes” without hesitation, her voice shaking with joy. Just when it seemed like the moment couldn’t get any better, her best friends emerged from their hiding spots, cheering, laughing, and wiping away their own tears.
The scene felt straight out of a movie—screams, hugs, and happy chaos. Overwhelmed with excitement, I fell into the arms of her girls, who had been keeping this secret for weeks. The love and joy surrounding them made this moment even more surreal.

Side Note: Seeing a classmate from ten years ago standing in front of my lens, saying “yes” to forever, felt surreal. Life has a funny way of bringing people back together at just the right time. Witnessing I’s happiness and capturing such a monumental day was truly an honor.
